  Thallus grey-white to pale creamy white or creamy grey, continuous, rimose to areolate, to 30 cm wide, 0.1–0.2 mm thick; areolae irregularly shaped to angular, 0.5–0.7 mm wide; surface smooth to rough and verruculose, lacking soredia and isidia. Prothallus not apparent. Photobiont cells 6–10 µm wide. Apothecia sessile, round to irregular, scattered to crowded, 0.2–1.0 mm wide; disc orange-red to bright red, red-brown to dark brown, glossy, epruinose, strongly convex to ±plane or concave; margin concolorous with the disc or slightly paler when immature, thin, persistent or becoming excluded with age. Exciple colourless to red, K+ red. Epihymenium 12–15 µm thick, red or orange-red, inspersed with fine reddish granules, K+ reddish purple. Hymenium 35–50 µm thick, colourless, K–. Hypothecium deep yellow to pale brown, 50–100 µm thick, K–; subhypothecium colourless or pale brown, to 50 µm thick, K+ pale yellow-brown. Paraphyses strongly conglutinated, mostly simple, 2–3 µm wide; apices not conspicuously swollen. Asci c. 30 × 10 µm. Ascospores elongate-ellipsoidal, 8–12 × 2.5–3.5 µm. Pycnidia not seen.
CHEMISTRY: Cortex K–, C–, P–, UV+ yellow; medulla K+ pale yellow-brown, C–, P+ red-orange; containing fumarprotocetraric acid (major), lichexanthone (major), quaesitic acid (minor), protocetraric acid (minor), atranorin (trace). Apothecia K+ reddish purple; containing russulone (major), norrussulone (trace).
     
  Known from scattered localities in northern N.T. where it occurs on bark and dead wood in monsoon forest at altitudes of 40–300 m; endemic.
